Figure skating (also known as solo or singles) is the discipline of Ice Figure Skating most commonly known around the world. Skaters can compete individually or in pairs and perform choreographed jumps, spins and steps to music.
Skaters would normally stay in skate school and compete in the skate school competitions held by Paradice, until they have reached “Freeskate”
Skaters can compete in Kiwiskate/Skate School figure skating grades (at skate school and club competitions) without being TC registered. These grades are predominantly for skaters new to our sport.
Once a skater becomes more serious, they tend to move away from skate school and focus on private (one-on-one) coaching. To find a private coach, you can:
- Contact Paradice reception directly
- Email us at aifscsecretary@gmail.com
- Visit the NZIFSA website to find an accredited coach near you (https://www.nzifsa.org.nz/coaches/)
A private coach works closely with a skater to develop their foundational skating skills and will determine when the skater is ready to sit tests or begin competing. Skaters must also pay ice fees to Paradice. Lessons typically take place during public sessions on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, or during designated figure skating sessions.
Progressing to higher grades requires skaters to pass official tests that assess their ability to perform specific moves, footwork, and elements.
The skating test levels are as follows:
- Kiwiskate
- Pre-Elementary
- Elementary
- Juvenile
- Basic Novice
- Intermediate Novice
- Advanced Novice
- Junior
- Senior
